I wrote about this last minute gift idea the first time back in March 2008. Wow, can’t believe that GiftStumped has been around that long!Actually, the 1st post on this blog was on November 1, 2007, and was titled Antique Diving Helmets for Nautical Lovers (guess there’s a bit of an eBay theme there too, but that’s coincidence because there are very few mentions of eBay on the blog in its entirety).

Here’s a quick summary of why I think this makes good last minute gift:
- It’s a unique gift
- If your gift recipient doesn’t use eBay now, he/she might enjoy exploring it a bit (knowing he/she now has some $$ to spend for free)
- You can buy almost anything there
- An eBay gift certificate can help you buy some pretty cool stuff that you wouldn’t see on Amazon or other shopping sites (like some of the items I talked about in my post about helping someone start a collection)
- Last minute benefit!!!! It is quick & easy
The potential downside to giving an eBay gift certificate:
- The recipient might find it a bit of a pain in the… to buy something on eBay if they are not used to shopping there
- Like any gift certificate, it could just go unused
- Invariably, the $$ amount will likely either cause the recipient to pony up more of their own money, or there will be an unused remnant that will just sit there in limbo

When you have the right magazine in your hands, you can make anything you want from the experience – you can find pieces of information, big or small, that are entertaining, educational, funny, and interesting. |

Most people don’t make the commitment of subscribing to a magazine. Either they’ve chosen to save the money and spend it elsewhere, or perhaps it just never occurred to them to subscribe to a particular magazine.
For those reasons – budget and awareness – giving the gift of a magazine subscription can be an amazing thing, when done right.
Here is something compelling I read in a magazine, as an advertisement by one of the magazine trade associations:

Magazines don’t blink on and off. They don’t show video or deliver ads that pop up out of nowhere. You can’t DVR magazines and you can’t play games on them.

Here are some of the most-compelling reasons why I feel that magazine subscriptions are a very nice (and appreciated) gift idea (especially a last minute gift idea!)
- Every time a new magazine comes in the mail, they are reminded of the gift (assuming you took the time to actually think about the right fit for your recipient!)
- Most people I know view magazines as a “guilty pleasure”, something they might not buy for themselves, or buy for themselves as often as they want (but it’s one of those few relaxing moments while waiting in a Dr.’s office)
- If you select a magazine subscription based on someone’s interests and/or hobbies (listen and do some small detective work; or maybe you just know), it will have some real meaning behind it
- You can take a magazine anywhere, making it one of the most portable gifts out there
- Buying a magazine subscription is often very inexpensive, but doesn’t seem cheap
- Many people pass along their magazines to friends & family who also enjoy reading them – so, really, you are giving a gift that keeps giving to the original recipient, as well as spreading more joy to other people (probably making your gift recipient feel nice when they pass on the magazine)
